Etymology: Entomocorus: Greek, entomos = cut, sharpen + Greek, kore = pupil (Ref. 45335 ) ;   melaphareus: Specific name derived from the Greek 'melanos', meaning black, and 'aphareus', meaning pelvic fin of a tuna, in reference to the unique dark coloration of pelvic fin. .

Dorsal spines (total): 2; Dorsal soft rays (total): 5; Anal soft rays : 19 - 21. Pelvic and pectoral fins densely covered with dark pigment, at least along anterior rays, in contrast to the hyaline fins of its congeners (Ref. 54767 ).
