EPINEPHELUS

CONIES, CABRILLAS, GROUPERS

Body robust, compressed, deepest at origin of dorsal fin; operculum edge with 3 flat spines; preoperculum serrate, with larger serrate at angle; tail usually rounded; 1 dorsal fin with X-XI spines, 12-19 rays, length of base of soft part not longer than that of spiny part; anal fin with III spines, 7-9 rays; body scales smooth.

A genus that is spread throughout the tropics and subtropics. There are 99 species, with nine endemic to the eastern Pacific.
