Eyes on left side; relatively slender, body height 36-47% of standard length; head short, 25-29% of standard length; mouth 21-25% of head length; eyes ~parallel, upper eye below edge of head, with crest behind it; most of teeth on blind side, in 1 row on both jaws; lateral line not extending onto head, relatively straight and without arch over pectoral; base of eye side pelvic on midline of body; urinary papilla on blind side, immediately behind anus; eye side pectoral 80% of head length, pointed, 3rd ray prolonged; 75-85 dorsal rays; 59-67 anal rays; 40-45 lateral line scales.

Eye side grey-brown, large dark blotch behind operculum that extends back along lower flank behind pectoral, fins paler than body, with dark speckles, pectoral with outer 1/3 dark; blind side pale.

Size: 10 cm.

Habitat: shallow soft bottoms.

Depth: 0-45 m.

Southern Baja and the Gulf of California to northern Peru.
