Overview
Main identification features
  • eyes: dark barbody: ~10 dark saddles
  • d: ii + i - (i+i) + viii-xii
  • lower lip - 4 flaps
Lower jaw not fleshy & not protruding; top lip without skin flaps, lower lip with 4 skin flaps; dorsal fin: a 2-spine finlet with origin on nape followed by 1-2 free spines then the main fin, II + I (or I + I) + IX-XI, 29-33; anal II, 33-37; pectoral 11-13 (usually 12) rays; 10 principal segmented tail fin rays; lateral line bends down under dorsal fin elements 18-22; lateral line scales 49-57, 22-26 on straight part; underbelly behind pelvic fins scaleless.

A dark bar through the eyes; 8-10 dark bars along top of back; remainder of body pale to lightly speckled; fins pale.

Size: 6 cm.

Habitat: sandy bottoms inshore & offshore.

Depth: 3-55 m.

Central to southern Gulf of California.
