Head distinctly depressed; snout long, sloping forward; mouth oblique, long, reaching to rear edge or past rear of eye; no barbels under chin; a small barbel below each front nostril; eye small (~63% of snout length); preopercle with 2-3 pores; dorsal VII spines (none filamentous), 10-12 (usually 11) rays, without elongate spines; anal 10 rays; 19-20 pectoral rays; pelvics fused in disc; male genital papilla slender; female genital papilla with rounded tip; body completely scaled behind level of 2nd ray of 2nd dorsal, with narrowing extension forwards to inner base of pectoral; scales large, rough; 6 large, rough (but not with long spines); scales on base of tail fin; 27 lateral scales.
