Overview
Main identification features
  • mid-snout: 1 papilla
  • female: body and ds: ~8 dark and white bars
  • male:dark, dorsal fin - white border
  • chin: 2 barbels
  • 2-3 bars under eye
  • scales - none or 1-4 behind pectoral + 2 on tail fin base
Dorsal rays VII + I, 11-12; anal rays I, 9; pectoral rays 18-20; pelvic disc present; scales usually absent (sometimes 1-4 scales just behind base of pectoral fin and two scales on base of tail fin); tip of snout with a small central fleshy knob; chin with 2 small barbels; first dorsal spine of males not prolonged.

Head and body with grey-brown irregular bars that have numerous pales spots superimposed on them; midlateral row of small elongate dark spots in middle of each dark bar.

Size: reaches 4.5 cm.

Inhabits tide pools and shallow rocky reefs.

Depth: 0-10 m.

Southern Baja California and Mazatlan (Mexico) to Colombia.

A species that has passed through the Panama Canal to the Atlantic.
