Etymology: Gonialosa: Greek, gonio = angle + Latin, alausa = a fish cited by Ausonius and Latin, halec = pickle, dealing with the Greek word hals = salt; it is also the old Saxon name for shad = "alli" ; 1591 (Ref. 45335 ) .

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 27. Belly with 17 + 10, total 27 scutes. Upper jaw expanded at tip, appearing to turn down, second supra-maxilla large (longer than pre-maxilla). Gill rakers fine and numerous (90 to 180 on lower arch). Scales moderate; pre-dorsal scales paired and overlapping in midline. Anal fin equal to or a little shorter than head. A dark spot behind opening.
