Character: HL 7.1-8.8, DGO 10.4-17.3, TR 2.9-3.4 in TL, Vert 124-127. Jaws slightly curved. Dark-brownish body, with numerous yellow-whitish dots, density increases with proximity to head; several rows of black-brownish dots on body side. Orange iris; whitish anterior nostril root, jaw pores and tail tip margin. 
Habitat: Inshore reef habitat 
Distribution: Indo-Pacific: Japan, Taiwan, Hawaii. 
Utility: commercial

Short description Morphology | Morphometrics

Vertebrae : 120 - 123. Dark purplish brown with small yellow spots which is sparse on the tail (Ref. 3257 ). This species is similar to Gymnothorax meleagris in having biserial maxillary teeth, with inner and outer series about equal in length; intermaxillary teeth arranged in a peripheral series, a median series, and an intermediate series on each side between the median and peripheral series. (Ref. 74922 ).
