About 5-6 prominent thick blackish bars on upper one-half to two-thirds of side; spaces between bars white to yellow, remainder of head and body silvery white; juveniles with dark midlateral stripe converging with black spot on caudal fin base, also a pair of dark stripes above: one on midline of snout to dorsal fin origin and another from upper margin of eye to dorsal surface of tail base; these stripes gradually fade as the bars begin to appear as the fish grows. Size: grows to 48 cm. Habitat: over sand, rubble and rock bottoms. Very abundant in some parts of the Gulf of California, forming huge daytime aggregations around rocky reefs. Depth: 1-30 m. The tip of Baja and the lower 2/3 of the Gulf of California to Ecuador, Galapagos and Malpelo. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed.
