Overview
Main identification features
  • initial phase : tan + 2 pale stripes
  • terminal phase : tan + 2 yellow lines and dark blue line
Dorsal rays IX, 12; anal rays III,12; pectoral rays 12; lateral line with 26-27 pored scales; jaw teeth caniniform; a pair of enlarged, curved canines at front of upper jaw and 2 pairs at front of lower jaw; rear of upper jaw without enlarged canines.

Initial phase greenish brown on back and whitish on lower two-thirds of side; a brown to greenish zigzag stripe from pectoral base to lower caudal base and similar, but darker stripe on upper edge of whitish area from rear margin of eye to upper caudal base; also a thin dark stripe along base of dorsal fin; snout yellowish; fins mainly translucent; terminal phase is more colourful with a yellow stripe passing below the eye and continued midlaterally to the caudal base; other markings are similar to the initial phase except the stripe extending back from the eye is bright blue and the ventral portion of the body is reddish; median fins pinkish to translucent, tail yellowish.

Size: attains at least 8 cm.

Inhabits shallow reefs.

Depth: 5-20 m.

In our region known only from the Revillagigedos; may also be present at Alijos Rocks and Guadalupe Island, off the coast of central Baja.
