Body very elongate and cylindrical; smout very short; eye large, longer than snout, about 6.0-10.0 in head length; mouth reaching below front part of eye; teeth pointed, in narrow bands on jaws; teeth at front roof of mouth in 1-2 irregular longitudinal rows; teeth curved; pectoral fins very tiny, much smaller than pupil of eye; dorsal and anal fins low, confluent around tip of tail.
Light to dark brown; several white blotches on head and on body below lateral line; anterior pores of lateral line surrounded by white-pigmented areas; gill opening black patch.
Size: reaches 70 cm.
Inhabits clean sand.
Depth: 5-30 m.
Costa Rica to Colombia, and Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos Islands.
