FEMALE——Length 6-7 mm.; black; antennae blackish above, more brownish-fuscous beneath ; face marks yellow, triangular, completely filling area between clypeus, eyes and antennae, extending above antennae and ending acutely on eye margin; collar with conspicuous transverse maculae; tubercles yellow: tegulae piceous, with large, anterior yellow maculae; wings hyaline basally, becoming deeply infuscated over apical ball, veins and stigma piceous ; front tibiae ferruginous anteriorly, outer face with a yellow stripe, apical half largely black; mid tibiae with a large basal yellow spot; basal third (or slightly more) of hind tibiae yellow; spurs noire testaceous; leg’s otherwise blackish: face narrowed below; chocks slightly narrower than eyes in lateral view; foveae deep, linear, separated from eye margin by a slightly wider space, upper end slightly divergent from eye; inner orbits slightly elevated above eye level; 2nd segment of flagellum short, broader than long, 1st and 3rd segments nearly as long as broad, the others definitely so; front coxae simple; dorsal area of propodeum slightly longer than metanotum, very coarsely reticulate, lateral and posterior faces quite finely rugose; metanotum coarsely rugose; face below antennae tessellate, punctures inevident, surface above antennae subrugose; scutum coarsely punctate, very closely so anteriorly, well separated but not sparse on scutellum; pleura very coarsely rugose; abdomen shining, punctures inevident.

MALE—Length 5.5-6.0 mm; black; antennae pale ferruginous beneath, darker above, scape black: ma mandibles with a yellow stripe: labrum yellow: tegulae piceous, maculated; wings hyaline at base, becoming rather deeply infuscated over apical half, veins and stigma piceous; maculations yellow, as follows; entire face below antennae, supraclypeal mark ending acutely between antennae, lateral fare marks extending rather narrowly along eye margin above antennae, a pair of transverse maculae on collar, entire tubercles, and a large blotch anteriorly on tegulae; femora largely black, hut front pair yellow beneath; all tibiae yellow, mid and hind pair with a subapical fuscous band; all tarsi and spurs yellow; face narrowed below; cheeks narrower than eyes in lateral view; scape slightly swollen, diameter at apex somewhat greater than that of flagellum: basal segment of flagellum nearly as long as bread, 2nd segment fully so, 3rd and following segments considerably longer; front coxae simple; dorsal area of propodeum sloping, about as long as metanotum, coarsely reticulate, extending over on to lateral and posterior surfaces, without distinct lateral carinae; metanotum coarsely rugose; punctures of scutum very coarse, deep and close, those if scutellum more distinctly separated; pleura very coarsely rugose; punctures of abdomen minute but distinct, rather sparse on shining basal segment. quite close en the ethers,

DISTRIBUTION —— Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia. and New Jersey; March to October.

FLOWER RECORDS Chrysanthemum, Chrysopsis, Erigeron, Eryngium, Hypericum, Ilex. Ilea, Melilotus, Oxydendrum, Oxypolis filiformis, Polygonum, Rhus, Rubus, cod Solidago.

Identification
H. confluens is distinct in the female in that the pits on the scutum and pleura are quite large, and especialy rough on the scutum. Also the propodeal triagle, from base to apex is criss-crossed with pronounced wrinkles.
