Overview
Main identification features
  • thorns blunt, 1 row on back
  • tail = 2x disc
  • tail: fold below
Disc oval, broader than long; front-side margins of disc nearly straight; snout bluntly angular, but not protruding; tail very long and slender, more than twice length of disc; tail fin absent, but fin fold present along underside of middle of tail; a central row of blunt thorns extending from head to shoulder girdle, two additional thorns much farther back and 1-2 thorns on each shoulder, skin otherwise smooth.

Generally dark brown to nearly blackish without distinctive marks.

Size: attains a total length of at least 257 cm (disc width 117 cm).

Inhabits sand-mud bottoms, common in estuaries.

Depth: to at least 100 m.

Southern Baja and the SW and central eastern Gulf of California to Ecuador, the Revillagigedos, Galapagos and Malpelo.
