Overview
Main identification features
  • eye: 1 simple cirrus

Dorsal rays XI-XIII, 16-18; anal rays II, 16-19; pectoral rays 11-12; a small cirrus above posterior nostril; an unbranched cirrus present above eye, very elongate in adult males; no cirri on nape; teeth in jaws incisor-like, in a single series and not movable; dorsal fin not notched between spiny and soft parts.

Overall brown to greenish, white on throat and belly region; upper back with series of dark brown saddle-like marks and horizontal row of white blotches along side at level of pectoral fin base; dorsal fin with a red blotch at front; adult males with red bar across throat, most evident during the breeding season.

Size: to 15 cm.

Inhabits intertidal shallows.

Depth: 0-25 m.

Monterey, California to the northern and central Gulf of California.
