Overview
Main identification features
  • oblique lines above lateral line straight below
  • mouth very oblique, ends under center eye
Dorsal rays X + I, 27-30; anal rays II, 6; pored lateral-line scales 46-52; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 13-16, total rakers 18-22; mouth strongly oblique, lower jaw projecting and directed upward; mouth very oblique, ends after center of eye; eye large, 3.6-3.7 in head length; 4 minute pores on tip of chin, no barbel; teeth small, in a single series; margin of preopercle without serrations; pectoral fins reaching beyond tips of depressed pelvic fins to about level of anus; second anal spine strong, longer than first soft ray; caudal fin very bluntly pointed, more pointed in young; soft dorsal and anal fins with scaly sheath on basal half.

Color silver, greyish on upper back; sides with distinct blackish stripes following scale rows; fins yellowish, especially pectoral, pelvic, anal, and tail fins.

Size: attains a length of 30 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-60 m.

Baja California Sur and the eastern Gulf of California to northern Peru.
