Body deep and wide; head round; no crest along top of head and nape; mouth terminal, oblique; lower jaw slightly projecting; head without lateral line pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; front and rear nostril tubular; tongue rounded to blunt, not bilobed; 1st dorsal fin with VI spines, 1st spine filamentous, 13 dorsal rays; 11 anal rays; 21 pectoral rays; pelvics fused into disc; scales large, rough; head, nape, chest and pectoral base scaleless; ~37 lateral scale rows; tail short, round, with 17 segmented rays.
Grey; body with 10 narrow brown, dark edged bars and wider paler interspaces, narrow bars with dark line in center; brown reticulum below eye and on operculum; 4 brown bars across top of head; cheeks and lower head with large cream spots; fins dusky; spinous dorsal black at rear; soft dorsal with diffuse dark streaks; tail with 6 faint vertical bars.
Size: 4.4 cm.
Habitat: rocky bottoms.
Depth: 90-150 m.
Cocos Island.
