Overview
Main identification features
  • blue and red bars - dark central line
  • thin blue bars: body ~18, head 5
Zebra Goby

Head round, mouth oblique; no crest along top of head and nape; head without lateral line pores; papillae around mouth, on cheeks and operculum and over eye; front nostril tubular; tongue rounded to blunt, not bilobed; 1st dorsal fin with VI spines, front spines filamentous in adults, 11-14 rays; anal I, 9-10; pectoral 18-21; pelvics fused into disc; scales large, rough; head, nape, chest and pectoral base scaleless, 24-30 in lateral series; tail short, round, with 17 segmented rays.

Red, ~13 narrow blue bars on body and tail base, 5 more on head, bars from top to bottom of body except those on head and anterior belly; both red and blue bars with central vertical line of dark pigment; all fins clear.

Size: 5.7 cm.

Habitat: caves and crevices in rocky areas.

Depth: 1-100 m.

California to the tip of Baja, and the Revillagigedos Islands.
