Main identification features
  • snout pointed, overhanging;eye over center mouth
  • d: origin over/behind pectoral
  • tail: greater than 1/2 total length tip hard, finless, blunt
  • mouth large; teeth pointed
  • pectoral moderate, base less than gill opening
OPHICHTHUS

SNAKE-EELS

Tip of tail a hard finless point; pectoral fins well developed, with restricted bases - opposite and above upper half of gill opening; teeth variable in number and size but never canine-like; dorsal origin above or behind gill opening; tail longer than head and trunk; body cylindrical stouter than tail; eye moderate to large, about over middle of mouth; front nostril tubular under overhanging snout; rear nostril opens just above lip or in mouth.

A circumglobal tropical to warm temperate genus with about 60 species; with 8 shallow water endemics (plus three deeper endemics) in our region.
