FAMILY OPHIDIIDAE

CUSKEELS

These fishes have an elongate, more or less eel-like body with the long-based dorsal and anal fins continuous with the tail fin; the pelvic fins are either absent or consist of one or two slender filamentous rays are close together and are situated under the eye; some species have barbels around the mouth. Unlike the similar-appearing brotulas (Family Bythitidae), cuskeels are egg layers, and males therefore lack specialised copulatory organs. These reef-dwelling fishes are rarely seen because of their cryptic habits. They hide in caves and crevices during the day and periodically emerge from cover at night to feed on crustaceans and fishes.

The family occurs worldwide in both shallow and deep seas. It contains about 48 genera and 217 species. Nineteen species in seven genera occur in our region.
