Dorsal rays 11, its origin nearer tail fin than pectoral base; anal 55-62 rays, origin nearer snout tip than tail fin; rakers on lower limb of first gill arch 16-19; pelvic fins absent; body elongate, its depth about 3.5-4.0 in standard length; belly with about 29 scutes; mouth upturned with lower jaw strongly projecting; 2 bones of top jaw not in contacting, resulting in a prominent gap in top jaw; upper jaw relatively short, not reaching level of center of eye; jaws with teeth.

Olive brown to bluish on back, silvery on sides and belly; back with dark line, caudal fin slightly yellowish.

Size: grows to 23 cm.

Inhabits inshore waters over soft bottoms, sometimes entering estuaries.

Depth: 0-10 m?.

Southern Baja and the SE Gulf of California to northern Peru.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 55 - 62. Belly with about 29 scutes. Lower jaw projecting, its mouth pointing obliquely upward; no hypo-maxilla. Pectoral fin a little longer than head; dorsal fin origin nearer to caudal fin base than to vertical from pectoral fin base by 1 and 1/2 eye diameters (or behind midpoint of body by 2 and 1/4 eye diameter); anal fin long, its origin much nearer to snout tip than to caudal fin base.
