Overview

Main identification features snout very long dorsal fin spines with cirri, deep notches between them red stripes and bars Dorsal rays X, 13; anal rays III, 7; lower 5 or 6 pectoral rays unbranched; lateral-line scales 51-53; 4 rows of large scales above lateral line in middle of body; palate teeth absent; body depth 4.4-4.6 in standard length; snout extremely long, its length about 2.0 in head; 2-4 cirri near tip of each dorsal spine; cirri before eye; preoperculum strongly serrate; operculum with 1 fat spine. Whitish with horizontal and vertical red bands forming a cross-hatch pattern. Size: to 13 cm. Habitat: generally seen perched on gorgonians or black coral at depths below 20 m, although associates with small gorgonians in as little as 5 m of water at some eastern Pacific sites. Depth: 5-100 m. Widely distributed in the Indo- Pacific; the tip of Baja and the SW and central eastern Gulf of California to Colombia, as well as the Revillagigedos, Galapagos and Malpelo. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Climate Zone: Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo). Depth Range Max: 100 m. Depth Range Min: 5 m. Diet: zooplankton; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); Pelagic crustacea. Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=28; Southern limit=-2; Western limit=-115; Eastern limit=-78; Latitudinal range=30; Longitudinal range=37. Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.
