Overview
Main identification features
  • head: orange spots and lines
  • d: 3rd spine longest, 3x 2nd
  • body and fins: orange and brown spots
  • body - ~7 angled bars
Dorsal rays X,13-14; anal rays III,6-8; pectoral rays 16-17; midlateral scale rows about 70; third dorsal spine greatly elevated, about three times longer than second; body depth 2.6- 2.8 in standard length.

Head with large orange spots and undulating lines; body and fins (except pectorals) covered with numerous brown spots; ~7 dark bars on body; sometimes a row of 5-6 large brown blotches on lower side.

Size: grows to at least 60 cm.

Inhabits rocky reefs and adjacent sand patches.

Depth: 1-70 m?.

NE Gulf of California to northern Peru.

Diet: bony fishes; mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); octopus/squid/cuttlefish.

Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=32; Southern limit=-7; Western limit=-115; Eastern limit=-78; Latitudinal range=39; Longitudinal range=37.

Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.

Feeding Group: Carnivore.
