Dorsal rays X+I, 27-28; anal rays II,7; pectoral rays 19; pored lateral line scales 48-51; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch 6-7, total 11-12; snout bulbous, projecting beyond upper jaw; mouth inferior, moderately oblique; lower jaw with more than 30 pairs of small barbels; eye relatively small, 6.0-6.6 in head length; teeth in villiform bands, none notably enlarged; margin of preopercle without serrations or spines; tail fin S shaped longest rays below middle of fin; pectoral fins about equal to head; soft dorsal and anal fins with basal scaly sheath.

Color dusky brownish with 4 faint blackish bars, body white ventrally; pectoral fins black, other fins dusky.

Maximum size to about 35 cm.

Inhabits coastal waters.

Depth: 1-30 m?.

Southern Baja and the lower eastern Gulf of California to Peru.
