Overview

Main identification features fatty ring around eye body deep, compressed, oval dorsal and anal finslong bases, long at front pelvics reduced to spine c: forked PEPRILUS BUTTERFISHES, HARVESTFISHES Body highly compressed, an elongate oval; snout short, mouth small, oblique; dorsal and anal fins long based, with I-III flattened, leaf-like spines at front, front lobes variously elongate, curved if long; no pelvic fins but a small spine projecting from pelvis. A new world tropical to temperate genus with 8 species; 4 endemic species in the eastern Pacific, with 2 in our region.
