Main identification features
  • oval
  • 2nd dorsal fin : 23-28 anal fin has 23-28 rays
  • adult -yellow + dark lines

Dorsal rays IX-XI, 23-28; anal rays III, 23-28; pectoral rays 17-20, fin pointed; pelvic fins present; gill rakers on first arch 8-9 + 20; body oval; snout blunt; upper and lower teeth same size; second dorsal and anal fins higher than spinous dorsal; tail fin forked with somewhat rounded lobes; scales very tiny.

Young are translucent whitish with silvery head and abdomen; adults yellowish with dark longitudinal lines on side.

Size: grows to at least 20 cm.

Inhabits surface layers of the high seas; young are associated with drifting jellyfish and floating Sargassum.

Depth: 0-550 m.

Worldwide in temperate and tropical seas. Costa Rica to Ecuador, Cocos, Malpelo and the Galapagos.
