Elongate, compressed; underside of head with a pronounced membranous keel; mouth very oblique; dorsal rays VI + I, 20-22; anal rays I, 19-22; pectoral rays 21; pelvic rays I, 14, pelvic fins separate; tail fin long, oval; total gill spines on first arch 26; head scaleless; scales of body very small, approximately 140-150 in midlateral row; scales rough on rear of body, smooth elsewhere.
Generally bluish or pale grey; scattered blue spots and/or lines on head; a silvery-white to blue-white stripe from above eye to origin of dorsal fin; fins pale except upper part of tail blue- white and lower part dusky red.
Size: reaches about 8 cm.
Inhabits sand-rubble bottoms.
Depth: 8-25 m.
Central Gulf of California to Colombia.
