Elongate, slender (depth 14% of total length), little compressed; head long (28% total length), narrow, not depressed; knob on snout; eye above mid-line, a little shorter than snout; between eyes 2/3 eye diameter; upper profile gently convex from snout to nape, straight to dorsal origin, gently convex to tail base, lower profile straight; mouth large, upper jaw bone very long, nearly reaching gill opening, broadest in middle, tapering to blunt point at rear; teeth in single series, on lower jaw and front of upper, slightly curved; tongue round tip; 12 short, blunt rakers on 1st gill arch; pelvics fused to form disc, about equal pectoral length; dorsal V + I, 14; 2 dorsals separated by length of snout, rays of 2nd dorsal about equal lengths; anal I, 12-15, long base; pectorals not reaching end of pelvics, ~23 rays; pelvics relatively long, reaching nearly to anus; scales small, imbedded, slightly visible only on sides; no lateral line.
Adult: grey to mottled above, whitish below, 6 double white spots along side of back, alternating with about 7 blackish areas, last one on tail base; white spot behind eye; cheeks with 2 dark bands obliquely down and back from eye; dorsal fins with 4 longitudinal series of dark spots; tail with 5-6 wavy bars; pectorals and pelvics plain; anal plain, without dark band.
Size: 8.5 cm.
Habitat: lagoons and river mouths.
Depth: 0-5 m.
Endemic to the Gulf of California (west, north and central-east).
