Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993); 中國動物誌-鱘形目; 海鰱目; 鯡形目及鼠鱚目(張, 2001)
Character: Body moderately slender, depth usually 21 to 35% of standard length; abdomen with sharply-keeled prepelvic and postpelvic scutes ; total scutes 31 to 34. Vertical striae on scales not meeting at center, only a few small perforations on hind part of scale. Lower gill rakers 38-77. Pelvic fins with i unbranched and 7 branched soft rays. Body dorsum blue-green, flanks silvery; a dark spot at dorsal-fin origin; margins of dorsal and caudal fin dusky.  
Habitat: Forms schools in coastal waters. 
Distribution: Distributed in Indo-West Pacific From Arabian Sea, Gulf of Aden, the Persian Gulf and Bombay eastward to Indonesia, north to Taiwan. It is a common species in Taiwan except eastern part. 
Utility: Marketed fresh and dried-salted.

Dorsal spines (total): 0; Dorsal soft rays (total): 13-21; Anal spines : 0; Anal soft rays : 12 - 23. Total number of scutes 31 to 34; lower gill rakers increasing with size of fish. Vertical striae on scales not meeting at center, only a few small perforations on hind part of scale. Closely resembles S. gibbosa which has fewer perforations on its scales. Of other sympatric Sardinella species, S. melanura has distinctive black caudal tips while S. albella has fewer scutes.
