Overview
Main identification features
  • silver, 3-4 rows orange spots on side
  • front of dorsal fin black
Elongate, strongly compressed; snout shorter than rest of head; teeth strongly compressed, triangular; base of tail with 3 keels; dorsal fins close together, the first relatively low with XV-XVIII spines; second dorsal higher than first with 16-19 rays followed by 7-10 finlets; anal fin similar in shape and height to second dorsal, with 16-21 rays followed by 7-10 finlets; gill rakers on first arch 2-4 + 9-14; lateral line gradually curving down toward tail base.

Bronze-green to greenish blue on back, silvery white on lower sides and belly; series of dark grey bars on sides; anterior half of first dorsal fin jet black, posterior half white; pectoral fins dusky.

Size: attains 112 cm and at least 7.3 Kg.

Habitat: occurs in schools in coastal seas.

Depth: 0-15 m.

Southern California to the Gulf of California to Peru, including the Galapagos Islands, Cocos and Malpelo
