Overview
Main identification features
  • head angular; forehead concave, very deep
  • dorsal and anal finslobes long
  • pelvics tiny
  • juvenile: dorsal fin - long filament
Dorsal rays VIII+I,20-24; anal rays II+I,17-18; dorsal and anal fin spines become embedded with age; gill rakers on lower limb of first arch (excluding rudiments) 29-34; body superficially scaleless, scales very small and embedded; scutes in lateral line very weak; body pentagonal shape and strongly compressed; head very deep with angular nape and very steep concave forehead-snout profile; dorsal and anal fin lobes prolonged in adults; juveniles have front dorsal spines extremely elongate and filamentous; pelvic fins elongate in small juveniles, becoming very short in adults. Similar to S. orstedii, but has much smaller pelvic fins, and a concave rather than straight forehead profile.

Overall silvery in color.

Size: reaches 42 cm.

Habitat: demersal on sandy bottoms.

Depth: 1-50 m.

Southern California to the lower half of the Gulf of California to Ecuador, Malpelo.
