Overview

Main identification features body ~8 dark bars or dark stripe + row belly spots Dorsal rays X (rarely IX), 11-13; anal rays III, 7; pectoral rays 17; lateral-line scales 44-50; body depth 3.2-3.4 in standard length. Brown on upper half, white below; about eight dark brown, vertically elongate, blotches on upper side, these often coalesed to form a broad stripe, continued along lower half of body as row of more or less isolated, large spots; a large black spot or saddle preceded by white bar or saddle on tail base. Size: to 18 cm. Inhabits small patch reefs or rocky outcrops in sand- rubble areas in rocks. Depth: 2-60 m. Central Baja to the Gulf of California to Peru, the Galapagos and Cocos. Attributes Abundance: Common. Cites: Not listed. Climate Zone: North Temperate (Californian Province &/or Northern Gulf of California); Northern Subtropical (Cortez Province + Sinaloan Gap); Northern Tropical (Mexican Province to Nicaragua + Revillagigedos); Equatorial (Costa Rica to Ecuador + Galapagos, Clipperton, Cocos, Malpelo); South Temperate (Peruvian Province ). Depth Range Max: 60 m. Depth Range Min: 2 m. Diet: mobile benthic crustacea (shrimps/crabs); bony fishes; octopus/squid/cuttlefish. Eastern Pacific Range: Northern limit=32; Southern limit=-6; Western limit=-115; Eastern limit=-78; Latitudinal range=38; Longitudinal range=37. Egg Type: Pelagic; Pelagic larva.
