STROMATEUS
BUTTERFISHES
Body ovate, moderately deep, compressed; snout blunt, rounded; mouth small; dorsal and anal fins long bases, without flat leaf-like spines at front, front lobes slightly raised; dorsal with V-VII small spines; pectorals moderately long; pelvic fins under thorax in juvenile, absent in adult, adult without spine projecting from pelvis; body spotted.
Three species in this temperate genus occurs on both side of the Atlantic, in the Mediterranean, as well as the southeast Pacific; 1 species endemic to the latter area enters our region.
