Main identification features
  • large eyes on top pointed head;mouth protrusible
  • 1st dorsal fin : iv
  • preopercle: large, curved, hooked spine
  • pelvic before pectoral
SYNCHIROPUS

DRAGONETS

Elongate body; long, slightly depressed head; eye large; snout short (< eye length), pointed; top jaw protrusible; 2 dorsal fins, 1st with IV spines, soft dorsal fin rays branched; gill opening small, oval, low on side; large preopercular spine with up curved main tip, and up to 11 points along its top side; pelvics I, 5, inserted under throat before pectorals each connected to pectoral by a membrane; 1 lateral line.

A circumtropical genus with almost 24 species; 1 is endemic to our region.
