Here's some general information for ya!!


The Sand Hickory is found on mostly dry, upland, sandy sites. It is often found with pine trees. They are easily identified by the dense tufts of hair on the silvery scales of the lower leaf surfaces. The twigs of the Carya pallida are slender and buds are much smaller with reddish brown scales. Teh bark of the tree is very tight and the nuts have thick shells. They grow up to about 18 meters tall. Bark also has rough ridges which form a dimond pattern on the tree.


Identification

The leaves are usually seven to nine foliate. The leaflets are hairy, resinous, fragrant, long-tapered and have silvery scales. The fruit is from one half to one and a half inches long. Its husk is both hairy and dotted with yellow scales.

Geography

The Sand Hickory is located from Virginia, west to Tennessee, south into Lousianna, and east into northwestern Florida. Populations occur as far north as Delaware and New Jersey and west into Southern Indiana and Illinois.
