CATALPA BIODIVERSITY PROJECT

Lesson Plan 15: Making a Mobile of the Life Cycle

by Brenda Hunt
8th grade biology teacher
Habersham County

Purpose:
Students visualize the life cycle of the moth by creating a mobile.

Materials:
wire or coat hangers, string, paper, cotton, markers, paint, crayons, scissors, glue

Step One:
Students may draw the stages of the life cycle or metamorphosis. Then copy them so there will be two of each. Crayons, markers or paint may be used to color the drawings. The drawings are then cut out and pasted together leaving an opening to fill the inner pocket with cotton or other materials to make the figure stand out.

Step Two:
Coat hangers or wire are bent to allow a mobile to be constructed with several levels and the figures or stages attached by string. Students should decide what arrangement best tells the story and order correctly.
