Using the UMAX Astra 1220U Flatbed Scanner

Overview

Some photographs (all SEMs) or other images on paper in the lab are scanned with the UMAX Astra 1220U and saved as a JPEG file using Adobe PhotoDeluxe 1.1. The files are then transferred using a s-copy command.

Starting

  • The on/off switch for the internal lamp of the Astra 1220U is computer-controlled through the PowerSaving 1220C program.
  • Open PhotoDeluxe under the taskbar. This is the application used to scan the images.

Positioning the Images

  • Open the cover of the scanner and place the picture image-side down on the glass. Make sure the entire image that you want is on the glass. (Orientation is not important at this point. It can be changed later in Adobe Photoshop.) Then, close the cover to secure the image.

Previewing and Scanning Photographs

  • Open PhotoDeluxe using the taskbar and click "On Your Own" on the left side of the screen.
  • Click "Get Photo" and then "Scan Photo", which will open a TWAIN selection box so it is possible to select the UMAX.
  • Click Advanced on the top of the new scanning box, the following options should be selected:
    • Flatbed Reflective
    • Color Photo
    • 600 dpi
    • No descreen
    • No filter
    • 100%
    • Auto-adjustment box checked
  • Click preview (only for 1st picture if all pictures are the same size, this will save time).
  • Select the crop box (only for 1st picture).
  • Click Scan.
  • Click File>>Export>>File Formats...
  • Name the file, click JPEG format, and okay twice
  • Close the file, click "Don't Save"

Transferring Images To A Directory

  • Open a Terminal Window
  • type 2dial followed by the JP##### to be transferred (to transfer JP80000, "2dial JP80000").
  • Verify the dl password.
  • The files will transfer automatically at this point.
  • Check to make sure everything that needs to be transferred has transferred over by going into the directory and listing everything.
  • Delete the files/folder from the user folder (only if you're sure the files have transfered over.
