Overview
All e-mails can be accessed by their folder name with vi under the directory /home/web/dl/mail. E-mails are saved to /home/web/dl/pa/co under the directory corresponding to the year they were written. All e-mails start with From e-mail_address Date and Time.
What to Keep in E-mail
The Header
The top of the e-mail file to be saved should always contain the:
- Date it was sent/received
- From line with an e-mail address
- To line
- Subject line.
Additional lines such as the CC or BCC should also be kept if it exists. All other information in the header section should be deleted.
The Body
Remember, we only need the actual content of the e-mail so try and get rid of any superfluous information.
- Reduce multiple blank lines to just one.
- Only keep readible text, not coding.
- Only keep attachments if their readible.
- Sometimes the message will repeat at the end of the e-mail with coding tags around it. Keep a watchout for those and remove them.
Saving the E-mail
To save the portion of the file that is the e-mail to the disk:
- Mark the very first and last line of the e-mail.
- Write from the first line you marked to the last line you marked to /home/web/dl/pa/co/ under the appropriate co directory.
For example, if you marked the first line a and the last line b:
:'a,'bw /home/web/dl/pa/co/co2005/filename
- The filename should contain the year, month, date, and the person who sent the e-mail. For example:
20050325.Lastname,_Firstname
- Delete the e-mail from the folder file after you save it.
