Connecting to Dial

First, you must be connected to dial to use the PINE e-mail system. Unless you're already on dial, follow the directions below to connect.

On UNIX operating systems or Mac OS X:

  • In a shelltool or Terminal window, in any directory, type ssh dial
  • When prompted to, enter the password.
    On Mac OS 9:

  • Open NiftyTelnet connecting to host/server address dial.pick.uga.edu. When connecting from outside, must first connect to pick2.pick.uga.edu or pick9.pick.uga.edu then ssh to dial.

    Viewing Attachments

If a piece of mail contains an attachment, you must first save it to somewhere on the disk. To view the attachment, you can transfer it over to a PC or Mac to open by entering in http://www.discoverlife.org/directory_path in a web browser and selecting the file. It is also best to use a Mac when viewing a file depending on the kind of file you are going to open.

  • After selecting the e-mail with the attachment from the INBOX INDEX and entering to read it, type v (lower case) to enter the ATTACHMENT INDEX.
  • A list of files attached to the e-mail will appear. Select the file you wish to view and type s (lower case)
  • You will be asked to specify the path (if you don't enter one, the default is /home/web/dl/) and name the file (one may already appear, but you can delete it and rename it). Name the file without any special characters nor spaces. After entering a file name, press Return and the file will automatically be saved to the directory you specified.
  • After saving the files for viewing, type e (lower case) to exit out of the ATTACHMENT INDEX and return to the e-mail message.
  • To transfer the file to the computer for viewing, use the NiftyTelnet Scp... feature or simply type into a web browser the address http://www.discoverlife.org/filename.
