occurrenceRemarks	Ocypus nitens (Schrank, 1781), found under rock, Søborg, Denmark, 9 April 2016 Keyed using The Staphylinidae (rove beetles) of Britain and Ireland, Parts 7 & 8 with check for Danish congeners. Subfamily: Staphylininae 1. Antennae fixed to upper surface of head 2. Antennae fixed inside the base of the mandibles 3. Antennae fixed well in front of the eyes 4. Antennae without club; head with eyes set forward; pronotum without longitudinal depressions; length >= 3mm Genus: Ocypus or Tasgius 1. Side border of pronotum bent downward towards front and reflexed under front angle 9. Elytra abutting so that suture is a simple, straight line; first antennal segment equal to or shorter than distance between antennal insertion points on front of head 17. Pronotum evenly and confusedly punctured throughout except sometimes for an unpunctured central strip 18. Body length > 10 mm (Staphylinina) 21. Pubescence on elytra homogenous 24. Discrete patches of yellow pubescence absent from abdominal tergites and head; elytra black Species: Ocypus nitens 1. Fore body black; neither pronotum nor abdomen patterned by pubescence 3. Pronotum with coarse punctures of roughly uniform size, the intervals between the punctures on average equal to or smaller than the diameters of the punctures 7. Legs mostly black 8. Temples more than 1.5x longer than diameter of eyes 9. Head and pronotum shining between the punctures, without microsculptures; body length smaller (under 20 mm) 10.
