My botanist friend Steve Bowling says all the low growing buckeyes in the middle Piedmont of Georgia are hybrids between Aesculus pavia and Aesculus sylvatica. The hybrid plants yield characteristics of both parents. I can't seem to find much information about the hybrid. Here is an image of Aesculus sylvatica:
