I was working in the Pensacola, Florida area this week. We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in Pensacola Beach. One fond memory I have of the Gulf of Mexico is the night-time summer thunderstorms off the coast. I can remember the lightning being spectacular. For several years now I wanted to visit the beach so I could photograph night-time thunderstorms. Unfortunately, a nasty cold front passed though the area prior to the work trip which changed the air mass. It was cooler with no humidity, yuck, and no thunderstorms. That all changed on Wednesday. The winds shifted to the south and the humidity returned along with the thunderstorms. On Thursday morning, I awoke at 0430 EDT to an energetic storm off the coast. The conditions were not perfect because of low foreground clouds obscuring the thunderstorm base. One image taken from my hotel room can be seen in my photostream. After daybreak the thunderstorm advanced to the coast. I took a few images from my hotel room but decided there was too much human junk in the foreground so I rushed to the beach and captured several images of this advancing "shelf cloud". en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arcus_cloud Light level was low so I took a long exposure which blurred the surf.
