  • large blunt, head
  • d: spines with cirri, without deep notches between
  • cheek: greater than 12 rows small scales
CIRRHITUS

HAWKFISHES

Body deep, not compressed; head deep, blunt; teeth on sides of roof of mouth; upper margin of preopercle finely serrated or smooth; cheek with small scales in >12 irregular rows; 2 indistinct flat spines on edge of operculum; dorsal fin with 11-12 soft rays, a tuft of cirri at tip of each spine; top 1 & lower 7 pectoral rays unbranched; scales smooth.

A tropical genus with 3 species in all 3 oceans; 1 species is endemic to the tropical eastern Pacific.
