- nostrils: front tubular, rear in mouth
- median fins low; dorsal fin origin on head
- tail: less than 1/2 total length tip hard, blunt
- very elongate
- pectoral: tiny flap at top gill opening
BASCANICHTHYS
SAND-EELS
Tip of tail finless, hard, blunt; pectoral fin present as small, narrow-based skin flap opposite upper half of gill opening; snout short, blunt, grooved on underside; jaw teeth small, conical, in 1 row; gill opening crescent-like, at lower side; dorsal and anal fins low; dorsal origin before gill opening; front nostril tubular, rear nostril opens in mouth; head and trunk a little longer than tail.
A circumtropical genus except for eastern Indian Ocean and central Pacific, with ~12 species; represented here by 3 endemics.
