Erigeron strigosus Muhl.

Erigeron strigosus plant

Family - Asteraceae

Stems - To +/-1m tall, erect, herbaceous, from fibrous roots, branching above, single from base, antrorse strigose, with vertical striations or sometimes carinate.

Erigeron strigosus stem Stem.

Leaves - Alternate. Lowest leaves on petioles to +/-5cm long. Blades oblanceolate, to 2cm broad, mostly entire. Cauline leaves sessile, linear to linear-oblong, reduced upward, entire, scabrous, antrorse strigose.

Erigeron strigosus plant Basal, middle, and upper leaves respectively.

Inflorescence - Loose cymose arrangement of single terminal flower heads. Flower heads to +/-1.5cm broad. Peduncles dense antrorse strigose.

Involucre - +/-7mm broad, 2-3mm tall. Phyllaries imbricate, antrorse strigose on midveins externally, 3mm long, .7mm broad, linear, often with reddish apices.

Erigeron strigosus involucre Involucre.

Ray flowers - White. Ligules 5-6mm long, 1mm broad, glabrous, obtuse at apex, 75-100 per flower head. Pappus of a few short capillary bristles.

Disk flowers - Disk to 7.5mm broad. Disk corollas 5-lobed, yellow. Corolla tube to 1.6mm long. Pappus of outer row of short scales, inner row of capillary bristles. Achenes 2-nerved.

Erigeron strigosus flowers

Flowering - May - September.

Habitat - Prairies, open woods, waste ground, open fields, roadsides, railroads.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This plant is frequent in dry, wild areas throughout the state. It is not as weedy as the more common E. annuus (L.) Pers. which is taller, has broader leaves, and has larger flower heads.

E. strigosus is popular with many flying insects and would make a decent garden subject.

Photographs taken on Taum Sauk Mountain, MO., 5-31-03.

170. Erigeron strigosus Muhlenberg ex Willdenow, Sp. Pl. 3: 1956. 1803.

Common eastern fleabane, vergerette rude

Erigeron annuus (Linnaeus) Persoon subsp. strigosus (Muhlenberg ex Willdenow) Wagenitz

Annuals, biennials, or short-lived perennials, 30—70 cm; fibrous-rooted, caudices simple, sometimes lignescent, sometimes producing rhizomes that bear leaf tufts at upturned ends. Stems erect or ascending, sparsely to moderately strigose to strigillose or hirsuto-strigillose (hairs usually ascending, rarely spreading, 0.1—1.2 mm), eglandular. Leaves basal (usually persistent through flowering) and cauline; basal blades spatulate to broadly or narrowly oblanceolate to linear, (10—)30—150(—170) × 5—15(—21) mm, cauline usually gradually reduced distally, continuing to near heads, margins entire or shallowly to deeply serrate or crenate, faces glabrous or glabrate to sparsely strigose or strigoso-hirsute, eglandular. Heads 10—200+ in loosely corymbiform to paniculiform-corymbiform arrays (on distal branches). Involucres (2—)3—4 × 5—12 mm. Phyllaries in 2—4 series, glabrous, strigose, or sparsely hirsute, sometimes minutely glandular. Ray florets 50—100; corollas white, less commonly pinkish or bluish, 4—6 mm, laminae coiling. Disc corollas 1.5—2.5 mm (throats sometimes slightly indurate and inflated). Cypselae (0.5—)0.9—1.2 mm, 2-nerved, faces sparsely strigose; pappi: outer crowns of setae or scales, inner 0 (rays) or of 8—15 bristles (disc).

Varieties 4 (4 in the flora): North America; introduced in Europe, Pacific Islands (Hawaii).
