Welcome to Jacana's Miscellany...

Intro ...

...The Jacana is a long-legged marsh bird commonly known as the Lotus bird or the Lily trotter. Eight species, placed in six genera, are found in both the New and the Old World tropics. It is rarely seen in captivity. The exceptions: Montréal Biodôme, Hamburg Zoo, and Tiergarten Zoo, Vienna.

It has unusually long toes and claws that allow it to run over floating vegetation and lily pads thus accounting for the name Lily trotter. The jacana inhabits freshwater ponds, swamps and lagoons and feeds on aquatic weeds and small invertibrates; the nest is a mass of floating vegetation. The wings have sharp spurs which the jacana uses for fighting. In most species both sexes have a dark brown or black plumage, a yellow wattle at the base of the bill and greenish-yellow wing feathers that are conspicuous during flight. The female is larger than the male, is polyandrous and lays eggs for a number of males; the male incubates the eggs and cares for the young.

... And much more ...

It's an eclectic bunch of pages as you would expect of a personal site.
