Resumen
Cola de bandera, Dara bandera

Cabeza puntiaguda; ojo grande; una aleta dorsal, X, 9-11; radios anales III, 9-11; radios pectorales 14; escamas en la línea lateral 48-56; boca corta, oblicua; mandíbula inferior saliente; márgenes del opérculo y del preopérculo serrados; opérculo con 2 espinas planas; una sola aleta dorsal con una hendidura entre las porciones espinosas y de radios suaves; aletas dorsal y anal con una cubierta basal de escamas bien desarrollada.

Color plateado; aleta caudal blanca con 5 bandas negras.

Tamaño: alcanza 50 cm.

Hábitat: algunas veces se le observa en cardúmenes grandes en zonas rocosas donde rompen las olas; los juveniles viven en pozos de mareas.

Profundidad: 0-26 m.

Amplia distribución en el Pacífico Oriental Tropical, desde el Este de África al Pacífico Oriental; habita desde la punta de Baja California a Ecuador y las islas oceánicas.

Citation: 臺灣魚類誌(沈等, 1993)
Character: Body oblong, compressed. Head length less than body depth; preorbital and preopercle margins serrate; 2 flat spines on opercle. Eye moderately large. Mouth small, maxilla extending to or slightly beyond a vertical at front edge of pupil; bands of fine teeth in jaws, vomer, and palatines. A single dorsal fin, deeply notched between spinous and soft-rayed portions, with X spines and 9 to 11 soft rays; anal fin with III spines and 10 to 11 soft rays; caudal fin moderately forked. Scales ctenoid, moderately large; lateral line complete, with 48 to 55 scales; a well-developed scaly sheath at base of dorsal and anal fins. Silvery, the front of snout and chin blackish; caudal fin white with a median dark stripe and two broad oblique black bands across each lobe, the lobe tips white; a dusky band in outer part of soft portion of dorsal fin except for white tip of high anterior part. 
Habitat: Tightly packed schools occur along the reef margin of rocky shorelines, from just below the breaking surf to a depth of a few meters. Young commonly in tide pools. Sometimes found in estuaries but reported to never enter freshwater environments. Feeds on  
Distribution: Widely distributed in Indo-Pacific and Eastern Pacific from Red Sea and East Africa to the eastern Pacific, north to southern Japan, south to New South Wales and Lord Howe Island. Absent from Easter Island, Pitcairn, Marquesas, Hawaiian Islands and Johnst 
Utility: Utilized fresh or dried salted.
