Overview Main identification features FAMILY MURAENESOCIDAE

PIKE-CONGER EELS

Pike congers are large, heavy bodied predators with large teeth and strong jaws. They have large, skin-covered eyes; well developed pectorals, well developed dorsal and anal fins, the dorsal origin over or just before the gill opening; pectoral fins centered on the upper edge of the gill openings; and a conspicuous lateral line that runs the length of the body.

The family is circumtropical, with 4 genera and 8 species. One endemic species is known from the tropical eastern Pacific.
