Flowering - June - September.

Habitat - Marshes, ponds, lakes, ox-bows, sloughs.

Origin - Native to U.S.

Other info. - This striking species can be found throughout Missouri. The plant is easy to identify becasue of its aquatic habitat, peltate leaves, and big, pale-yellow flowers.
The starchy, tuberous growths of the rootstock were eaten by natives, as were the seeds. The attractive seed pods are frequently used in dried flower arrangements.
The large leaves of Nelumbo are used by wildlife for shelter and shade.
Steyermark reported that the seeds of N. lutea can stay viable after a dormant period of more than 200 years.

Photographs taken at the Kansas City Zoo, 8-2-99, and at the Eufala National Wildlife Refuge, AL., 6-4-06.
