Radios dorsales X + I, 21-23; radios anales II, 7, 2da espina larga y gruesa; radios pectorales 16-18; poros de la línea lateral 46-52; branquiespinas en la rama inferior del primer arco 14-17; hocico bulboso, proyectándose bastante hacia adelante de la mandíbula superior; boca horizontal o sólo un poco oblicua; sin barbillas en el mentón; ojo 3.8-4.9 en la longitud de la cabeza; dientes viliformes, en bandas, más grandes los de la fila más externa de la mandíbula superior; margen del preopérculo con cerca de 8-10 espinas o dentículos, aumentando de tamaño ventralmente; segunda espina dorsal y anal muy robustas; margen de la aleta caudal con una punta central corta o larga, radios centrales son los más largos; aletas pectorales relativamente cortas, que quedan a una distancia grande de los extremos de las pélvicas cuando éstas se presionan contra el cuerpo; aletas dorsal suave y anal con una cubierta de escamas.

Color plateado con márgenes de las escamas cenizos, grisáceo en el dorso; aletas cenizas con excepción de las espinas pélvicas y anales que son de color blancuzco.

Tamaño: hasta cerca de 30 cm.

Habita en fondos arenosos de bahías, abundante en esteros.

Profundidad: 1-20 m.

El este central del Golfo de California a Ecuador.
