Radios dorsales III, 42-48; radios anales II, 38-46; radios pectorales 22-23; aletas pélvicas ausentes; aleta caudal muy bifurcada; total de branquiespinas en el primer arco 23-27; cuerpo relativamente alto, su altura 1.6-2.1 en la longitud estándar; hocico mas corto que el diámetro del ojo; aleta dorsal y particularmente la anal, largas y falcadas.

Color blanco plateado.

Tamaño: crece hasta al menos 33 cm.

Hábitat sobre fondos blandos.

Profundidad: 10-40 m.

El oeste y este centrál del Golfo de California al norte de Chile, y las Galápagos.
